Wis. burglars take safe with wedding cake orders

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Burglars who stole cash from a local cafe and bakery likely never knew the havoc they were creating for area brides and grooms.

Even Bob Heisler, owner of LaSure's Cafe and Bakery, wasn't too concerned when he learned of the break-in early Tuesday. He knew he only had petty cash in his safe.

Then he learned the whole safe was taken.

"My wife just about screamed. I mean, she just went nuts," he said.

In addition to the petty cash, the safe held every contract for every wedding cake for this summer and the next.

The Heislers write every order by hand as they have for 30 years, and the list is not on a computer. The detailed process includes specific drawings and requests for each of the nearly 250 wedding cakes they prepare each year.

"Anything for after this coming Sunday, we don't have a contract," Heisler said.

Record Money: Wedding Bills

EVERYONE wants the day they marry to be memorable - but, if you're not careful, you could end up remembering it for the wrong reason.

The typical wedding now costs about £18,000, making it one of the most expensive single events most people are likely to face - apart from buying a house.

Few couples have that kind of cash to spare, so the vast majority must save or borrow - and the credit crunch is making both things more difficult.

That doesn't mean you can't still have a great day without decades in debt, but it does mean putting extra thought into what you spend and how you fund it.

Carrie Herron, a financial adviser at investment firm Bell Lawrie, says: "The best advice is to save or invest - whichever is the most relevant to you - rather than borrow.

Lucky in Love: 7/7/07 popular wedding date

Nationwide, tens of thousands of brides-to-be are planning one of the most special days of their lives around a very lucky date: July 7.

Forget the recommended year of planning, some of the nearly 38,000 brides registered to exchange vows on 7/7/07 - that count includes high-profile summer bride Eva Longoria - have been eagerly awaiting this exact date for years. So many are seeking this date that the Rev. Amy Miller is planning a marathon of marriages, of sorts, at the Phoenix Zoo for Valley couples looking to stay lucky in love.

"This is a hugely popular day to get married, or even to renew your vows," said Miller, who has rented the two chapels to perform as many private and group marriages as possible on July 7.

Plus, the luckiest day of the century happens to fall on a Saturday, which could also account for the date’s average amount of projected weddings nearly tripling.
